Early Learners Shine at STEM Night

Rebecca Messler, Lower School Director
Our youngest learners and their families came together for the 7th annual Clairbourn Early Learning STEM Night for an evening full of exploration, creativity, and hands-on problem-solving. In the weeks leading up to the event, students were immersed in the engineering and design thinking process, learning how to empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test their ideas. Their challenge this year was to help Little Red Riding Hood save Grandma from the wolf by designing and constructing a basket that could zipline safely out Grandma's window using her clothesline.

Along the way, students explored key STEM concepts such as gravity, force, and tension. They experimented with different container shapes, supplies, and weights, tested various zipline slopes and materials, and refined their prototypes to see which designs worked best. Their learning was enriched by visits from a real engineer, who shared insights about his work, and some Clairbourn 6th graders, who spoke about their own ziplining adventure on the school trip to Pali earlier this year. Mr. Beaber also guided students through hands-on lessons in I-Lab and led impressive demonstrations using a giant zipline constructed from Dr. Patzlaff’s second-floor office!

The evening was the culmination of weeks of learning, as students and families worked together to construct and test their final designs on the ziplines set up in the MPB. It was an exciting night that celebrated curiosity, persistence, collaboration, and the joy of discovery, reminding us all that STEM learning is about more than just the project, but about nurturing confident, creative thinkers along the way.
