Combination Music Teacher / Middle School Specialist

Clairbourn School, a Junior PreK through eighth grade independent school nestled at the confluence of Pasadena, San Marino, and San Gabriel, is actively seeking a part-time or full-time music teacher for the 26-27 school year. Clairbourn School is seeking a dynamic, flexible, and creative educator for a unique combination teaching position that may be structured as either part-time or full-time, depending on the strengths, experience, and capabilities of the selected candidate. This role combines elementary instrumental music instruction with middle school band leadership and elective/specialist opportunities in the performing arts and communication fields.

Contract to begin August 1, 2026. Salary is competitive and is commensurate with education, skills, and experience, with a generous benefits package including health, dental, and vision insurance, life insurance, and retirement benefits. Salary range is between $70,000 and $95,000 based on our salary scale. 

The ideal candidate is passionate about developing young musicians, enjoys working with elementary and middle school students, and brings creativity and enthusiasm to a variety of performing arts experiences. This position works collaboratively with the school’s Music Director/Teacher Leader to support and grow a vibrant music and performing arts program across multiple grade levels.


Primary Responsibilities

Elementary Instrumental Music
  • Teach beginning and intermediate wind instruments to 4th and 5th-grade students
  • Develop foundational music literacy, technique, rehearsal skills, and ensemble performance
  • Prepare students for concerts, performances, and school events
Middle School Band
  • Co-teach the middle school band program
  • Collaborate on rehearsals, performances, concerts, and special music events
  • Foster musicianship, teamwork, discipline, and confidence in student performers
  • Provide input on appropriate repertoire and differentiate instruction for varying skill levels
Middle School Specialist / Elective Classes
Depending on candidate strengths and school needs, additional teaching responsibilities may include:
  • General music
  • Choir or singing classes
  • Drama or theater
  • Public speaking or interviewing/media skills
  • Other creative arts or enrichment classes
Additional Opportunities
Depending on the candidate's interest and experience, opportunities may also exist to:
  • Work with preschool and elementary students in general music or enrichment classes
  • Assist with performances and productions
  • Collaborate on the continued development of the school’s PK-8 music and performing arts program
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Music, Performing Arts, Education, or related field
  • Teaching credential or ability to obtain appropriate credential preferred
  • Experience teaching instrumental music and/or directing ensembles
  • Classroom management and communication skills
  • Ability to inspire and engage students across a range of ages and abilities
  • Flexibility, creativity, and willingness to contribute to a growing arts program
Preferred Qualities
  • Multi-instrumental experience, particularly with wind instruments
  • Piano accompaniment skills a plus
  • Experience with vocal music, theater, or media/interviewing instruction
  • Experience working with school-age children
  • Collaborative spirit and enthusiasm for school community involvement
  • Ability to adapt and help shape a unique, evolving program
Position Structure
This is a flexible position that may be designed as:
  • Part-time focused primarily on instrumental music and band, or
  • Full-time, including additional middle school specialist/elective responsibilities
The final structure of the role will depend on the experience, interests, and capabilities of the selected candidate.
