What is your connection/history with the school?I am the parent of Clairbourn alumni Natalie and Matthew.
What makes you want to serve on the Board?Clairbourn is a fantastic school. Both of our children attended Clairbourn School since Kindergarten. Even though they graduated quite a number of years ago, the values instilled in them at Clairbourn have benefited them in life after Clairbourn. Although my children have moved on, my Board service allows me to continue to be a part of Clairbourn and I can help ensure future children and families benefit from Clairbourn’s program that emphasizes more than just strong academics—Clairbourn helps shape a child into a caring, socially well-adjusted and ethical individual.
What work, volunteer, passions, hobbies do you have that give you insight or skills that are helpful to the school? As a member of the Clairbourn Board, I am able to apply my background and skills as a lawyer to my role as Trustee. I have experience working with corporate governance and regularly attending Board of Directors meetings. I have been at the school for a long time, and I feel that I understand Clairbourn’s goals and some of its history, so I hope to be able to provide valuable feedback and opinions. I would like to help make sure the school successfully adapts, as needed, for the future. I have experienced a wide range of educational options in my life (e.g. public school, international school, private school), and I hope to add that perspective.
What is your favorite Clairbourn experience/memory that exemplifies our mission of Creating Scholars and Leaders with Heart? When my kids were in the younger grades, I especially loved the kind teachers, the emphasis on social development in addition to academics, and the fact that they had the opportunity to develop public speaking skills in the Morning Assembly. They are fearless now when it comes to public speaking. In middle school, my favorite unique experience was the exchange program with the Huntingtower School in Melbourne, Australia. Our family hosted two middle-schoolers, and it was such a great experience for our entire family to learn about how children in Australia experience life differently from us and yet in many ways also similarly to us. Our son had the best experience visiting his friends in Australia the year after to stay with one of the families we hosted. It’s been many years, and our family still stays in touch with these friends from around the world!
