The Power of YET

Terri Gier, Grade 5 Teacher
What is a growth mindset? It is the belief that abilities can be developed through dedication, practice, and effort. Through daily reflections and student-led messages in morning assembly, our students explored how learning, perseverance, and gratitude all work together to make their minds stronger.

We talked about how the brain works like a muscle: the more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Each challenge, whether learning to read a new word, solving a math problem, or trying something unfamiliar, helps build new brain connections. Instead of being discouraged by difficulty, students learned to see effort as an essential part of the learning process.

As a school that has stood for 100 years of educational excellence, we continue to encourage our students to discover the powerful word “yet.” When someone says, “I don’t understand this yet,” it transforms frustration into possibility. Adding “yet” reminds us that understanding comes with time and practice. It encourages curiosity, confidence, and persistence, which are qualities that keep us motivated when things feel hard.

At Clairbourn, we see mistakes as opportunities. Students reflected on how “oops” moments, like spilling paint or solving a problem incorrectly, are not failures but invitations to think differently. Each misstep helps the brain ask new questions and find better solutions. By seeing mistakes with positivity, we strengthen both our resilience and creativity.

We also value the importance of effort and practice by learning that growth isn’t about instant success, but a consistent progress. Every time we practice reading, writing, or working through tough problems, our brains adapt and improve. Effort we realize is a choice, and one that leads to long-term success.

Let it be an empowering reminder to us all that everyone can be a Growth Mindset Champion. Students are encouraged to apply what they learned by supporting their peers, celebrating effort, offering encouragement, and reminding each other that growth takes time. When one person believes in their own potential, it inspires others to do the same.
