Packing A Mental Packpack

Tara Edwards, Grade 4 teacher and Jeanette Zamora, Director of Communications and Marketing
Each morning as students prepare for school, they carefully pack their backpacks with essentials like pencils, notebooks, and homework. But beyond these tangible supplies, it is equally important to prepare your “mental backpack.” Just as we need tools for learning, we also need qualities that help us navigate the each day with resilience, kindness and openness.

One of the most important items to pack is a positive attitude. Mornings can be rough because you might oversleep, skip breakfast, or start the day with a disagreement. It’s easy to feel frustrated, but carrying a positive attitude can transform the day ahead. A positive attitude means choosing to respond constructively to challenges. Even when circumstances don’t go our way, we have the power to shape our responses. This choice can make all the difference, as a positive mindset tends to open doors, make us happier, and help us move forward even when things get tough.

Another essential item for our mental backpacks is compassion, accompanied by respect. Compassion is about noticing when others are struggling and extending a hand. It’s the understanding and empathy that compels us to reach out to a friend who’s sitting alone or to listen when someone is having a hard day. Respect flows naturally from compassion. It’s the honor and appreciation we show others through actions like listening, playing fair, and using kind words. Compassion and respect together help build a community where everyone feels valued, understood, and supported.

In addition to compassion and respect, perseverance is crucial to carry with us. Perseverance is about sticking with something even when it gets tough. Whether it’s practicing a musical instrument, working on a difficult project, or learning a new skill, perseverance is the drive that keeps us moving forward. It’s about understanding that failure is part of the learning process and that each attempt, even if it’s imperfect, brings us one step closer to success. As the saying goes, “Success consists of getting up just one more time than you fall.”

Closely linked to perseverance is the idea of a growth mindset, which involves believing in our ability to improve. Having a growth mindset means understanding one's talents and abilities aren’t fixed; they can be developed through practice and effort. When we replace “I’m bad at this” with “I can get better at this,” it encourages a sense of possibility and resilience. Studies show this approach actually strengthens our brain’s ability to learn, making a growth mindset one of the most powerful tools in our mental backpack.

Clairbourn students reflect on these qualities, recognizing how each one helps them navigate both challenges and opportunities. A positive attitude, compassion, respect, perseverance, and a growth mindset. When we pack these in our mental backpacks, we’re not only ready to learn but also prepared to be a positive force in our community. With these tools in hand, each day at school becomes a new chance to grow, support others, and create a welcoming environment for everyone.
