101 Getting Ready for First Grade: MATH
Grade 1 In this class, the children will learn basic math concepts and develop math skills through cooperative problem solving activities and hands-on activities with pattern blocks, unifix cubes, geoboards, tiles, tangrams, games, and puzzles. We will also do engaging activities with money, time, and estimating, with emphasis placed on developing number sense. The students will develop their critical thinking skills and will be on the road to success in math!

102 Transition - Grade 1 to Grade 2
Grade 2 Build on first grade skills in math, reading, grammar and language arts. Add new vocabulary, increase fluency, and improve comprehension. We will work with numbers sense, fractions, decimals, study graphs and charts, work on money problems and determine strategies to solve word problems.

104 Comic Books Creation
Grades 2-4 Children’s picture books, comic books, and storyboarding all share one thing in common: the picture tells the story. Here students create stories visually, using sequential drawings. After mastering the basics of visual storytelling, students explore the use of words as complimentary to their drawings. The use of dialogue is incorporated as well. By the end of class, each student will have created his/her own comic book to take home to share with friends and family. Included: a guide to drawing from the You Can Draw DK series.

105 Academic Computing & Reports
Grades 3-8 Learn to use the computer and the Internet to make school reports and essays. Students will also improve their keyboarding skills while learning the entire Microsoft Office Suite. While using all the programs to their fullest, students will improve their reports by adding graphics. More than just a typing class, this workshop should improve your students’ grades as well.

107 Reading Comprehension
Grades 4-8 Students will work on understanding what they read. Through a variety of fun exercises, students will focus on picking out information in reading selections. This will lead to more efficient reading. Many group exercises will be presented orally to help students become more comfortable speaking in front of others.

201 Getting Ready for First Grade - READING
Grade 1 Beginning First Grade is a big step! This course will help your child make a smooth transition from Kindergarten into First Grade. The class is designed to meet the needs of children at all levels. It will help emerging readers learn basic reading skills and strategies, with special emphasis on phonics. It will also expand the skills of an advanced reader through phonics and reading comprehension activities. Give your child a head start by giving them the tools they need for reading, and help them start out First Grade with confidence and success.

202 America the Beautiful
Grades 1-3 Learn about our country, the United States of America. Improve writing skills and learn about the flag, monuments, national parks, heros, and much more. Students will make an art book documenting key symbols of American history. We will use clay to make a Statue of Liberty.

Grades 1-3 What makes a plant grow? What makes a plane fly? How do rocks form? How does a magnet work? These and other cool questions will be explored using hands-on activities. 206 Calligraphy
Grades 3-8 Students will learn the fine arts of calligraphy and basic illumination. They will practice three different common scripts: Chancery Italic, Gothic and Uncial, and they will explore other free-form scripts or create their own. Additionally, students will create ornate lettering and designs for greeting cards and bookmarks. Finally, students will enjoy creating ambigrams: scripts that read the same way right-side-up as up-side-down (see below) or backward as forwards. Included: calligraphy pen, nibs, ink, materials box and The Art of Illuminating guide.

Grades 5-8 Master one of the hottest Web 2.0 technologies - podcasting! 301 Everyday Mathematics® for First Grade
Grade 1 Everyday Mathematics® was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project to give students in elementary grades more mathematical content and to make them life-long mathematical thinkers. The program has had tremendous success in schools throughout the United States. It is used at Clairbourn in grades 1-5. Students use geoboards, tape measurers, dominos, dice, and calculators as well as paper and pencil..

303 Computer Workshop
Grades 1-2 Students learn to use all of the programs in our computer lab. They will explore and become proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, Word, Powerpoint and Publisher. They will design a t-shirt with images of their choice, and take the t-shirt home at the end of class.

405 Musical Theatre Workshop
Grades 2-4 The class will sing, dance, and act in preparing a musical revue with some of Broadway’s greatest hit songs. Everyone will gain solo and ensemble experience, with no previous experience or training necessary. Students will practice auditioning, learn tips on good vocal technique, and entertain other campers with the final production.

406 Robots and Machines
Grades 3-8 Using the new and old Lego Mindstorms, students will build and program their own machines. Each student will have their own RCX/NXT to use and program during the course. The principles of gearing, torque, friction, mass, list programming, automation, and production will be taught. Students will have contests to see who can build the fastest, the most durable, the biggest, and the most powerful machine. A Lego prize will be given to every student at the end of the course.

503 From the Ground Up
Grades 1-4 The sky is the limit in this science class that teaches all aspects of flight and aerodynamics. Students will build and fly machines from the first balloons to the space age rockets of today and tomorrow. History will unfold as each student makes his or her own flying model while learning the principles of lift, drag, thrust, and gravity. Students will take their projects home every week.

602 A Magic Carpet Ride

603 Ceramic Sculpture
Grades 3-8 This course will help students learn and develop hand-building skills in ceramics. Students will also be able to glaze and take home all of their masterpieces.

604 Acrylic Action Figure Painting
Grades 3-8 Dry brushing, inking, color washing, highlighting, low lighting, and blending are taught on figures made of plastic and/or pewter. The figures will be Knights of the Realm or figures the students want to bring in. All supplies will be provided. Each student will be given a Knight to paint and decorate. Other figures may include dragons, tree ents, goblins, orcs, and elves. At the end of the class the student will be able to take home their completed knight (sampled picture below).

Pass-ball is an exciting sport that involves a lot of running. Speed is an asset, but the nature of pass-ball facilitates the development of an elusive style of running, usually seen in football halfbacks. The game’s most important aspect is passing the ball. Any student who is enrolled in Summer Spree 2008 is eligible for Daycare. Morning daycare is available from 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. Afternoon Daycare is available as a block from 3:00 until 5:30 p.m. There is no Daycare between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Please see the back of the enclosed Registration form for prices and options for Daycare.
