Each year several books are nominated to
be part of the California Young Reader Medal Program (CYRM),
which is sponsored by four teacher and library associations.
Books are chosen in 5 categories: Primary, Intermediate, Middle
School/Junior High, Young Adult, and Picture Books for Older
Readers. The students read the nominated books and then vote
for their favorite one in the age-appropriate category. For
more information on the California Young Reader Medal Program,

As
part of our library program, we read the Primary category
books to the students in 1st -3rd grades when they visit the
library. The students vote on their favorite book during a
library visit. The nominated Picture Books for Older Readers
are read to 3rd - 5th graders, who then vote for their favorite
book during library time.
We challenge the 4th - 5th graders to read
the books nominated in the Intermediate Category, and we challenge
the 6th - 8th graders to read the books in the Middle School/Junior
High Category. If the students in grades 4-8 read all three
nominated books, and can answer comprehension questions about
each book correctly, they are invited to "Lunch in the
Library" during the last week in March. During lunch
we discuss the books and the students vote for
their favorite ones.
