Library - The library as an ever-available resource for school and personal use, before or after school, during classes, or during study hall. Additional library time as contracted between middle school teachers and the librarian, to do special projects. Monthly book talks during English class by librarian to stimulate independent reading. Skills emphasized include:

  • Using the card catalog and search engines to locate information
  • Using the Internet independently to locate information
  • Maintaining an interest in reading, and knowledge of recently-published works
Reading & Literature
  • Developing critical thinking skills through written and oral literary analysis
  • Reading and analyzing a variety of literary workings, including myths and legends
  • Connecting literature and history
  • Understanding the structure and organization of different rhetorical strategies
  • Strategies for specialized vocabulary development
  • Literary devices: symbolism, imagery, metaphor
Writing & Language Arts
  • Writing of a variety of narrative and expository pieces
  • Conventions and usage of standard English
  • Using the rules of grammar to improve writing
  • Using a variety of organizational structures in writing, according to purpose
  • Development of a thesis using multiple authoritative sources
Physical Education
  • Conditioning and fitness activities. Five-Mile-Club walk/jog/run for 30 minutes each week.
  • Team sports skill-building: Volleyball, Football, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball/Softball, and Track and Field.
  • Swimming: introduction of racing dives, reinforcement of stroke development, free swim and water games.
