Library - Scope and Sequence Summary
 

Kindergarten
Listen to two books read aloud, often accompanied by a poem, flannel board story, or song. Skills taught include:
  • Learning about a library
  • Sharing stories
  • Using a library correctly
  • Understanding library and book terms
First Grade
Librarian read-aloud and lesson on using the library; student selection of books to check out for personal or classroom use. Skills taught include:
  • Mastering checkout procedures
  • Understanding how materials are arranged
  • Enlarging library and book vocabulary
  • Telling a story from a wordless book ("Storyteller of the Week")
Second Grade
Librarian read-aloud and lesson on using the library; student selection of books to check out for personal or classroom use. Skills taught include:
  • Understanding basic genres
  • Distinguishing the roles of the author, illustrator, and publisher
  • Using call numbers for finding fiction books
  • Identifying various media used in illustration, and follow-up art lesson during art specialist class
Third Grade
Librarian read-aloud and lesson on using the library, including technology resources; student selection of books to check out for personal or classroom use. Introduction of optional Reading Patch Club to encourage recreational reading. Skills taught include:
  • Using an encyclopedia and doing simple research
  • Distinguishing between biography, autobiography, and collective biography
  • Elaborating on genres
  • Using call numbers for finding non-fiction books
  • Using library research to complete a research project assigned by the classroom teacher
Fourth Grade
Librarian read-aloud and lesson on using the library; library research for classroom papers and projects; student selection of books to check out for personal or classroom use. Reading Patch Club is emphasized. Skills taught include:
  • Using reference tools
  • Using the Dewey Decimal System
  • Research using more than one reference source
  • Enlarging on encyclopedia reference skills
  • Simple bibliographies
  • Exploring genres to develop interest areas
Fifth Grade
Librarian read-aloud and lesson on using the library; library research for classroom papers and projects; student selection of books to check out for personal or classroom use. Reading Patch Club becomes mandatory. Skills taught include:
  • Using search engines to locate information
  • Independent use of library resources
  • Distinguishing relevant information in research
  • Research using multiple reference sources
  • Using proper bibliographic forms
  • Expanding interesting in reading various genres
Middle School
The library as an ever-available resource for school and personal use, before or after school, during classes, or during study hall. Additional library time as contracted between middle school teachers and the librarian, to do special projects. Monthly book talks during English class by librarian to stimulate independent reading. Skills emphasized include:
  • Using the card catalog and search engines to locate information
  • Using the Internet independently to locate information
  • Maintaining an interest in reading, and knowledge of recently-published works
